Pinctada Maxima is the species of Pearl Shell that produces the beautiful Australian South Sea Pearl.
Australia grows the worlds largest and most lustrous of this pearl shell, and is therefore known to produce the worlds most highly prized and largest Cultured South Sea Pearls. Pinctada Maxima can grow up to about 32cm in diameter.
The strong inner part of the shell is composed of nacre, also known as “Mother of Pearl”. This nacre covers the inserted nucleus to form a pearl over a period of about 2 years.
