About us

Hello and welcome to Kimmie Designs
My name is Kim, but as you know, in Australia if your name is long, it is shortened, if your name is short, it is lengthened, and so, I am often called Kimmie.
Originally from New Zealand, I travelled Australia and found myself in Broome, a place I had never really heard much about, back in the late 1980’s. And like so many, I found it impossible to leave. Broome as a place gets in your blood and my blood now is infused with the colours and beauty of Broome and the Kimberley. My name is even in the region, it’s like I was meant to be here!
After various jobs, a bit of exploring, and being young and enjoying the Broome Social Life, I was then lucky enough to land a job with Paspaley Pearls, working on one of their harvest boats, 3 months at sea, cruising to all the pearl farms to work and witness first hand the pearl harvest process.
I then went back to office work, and worked for Broome pearls (now known as Kailis Pearls) and then Arrow Pearls for 8 years. These were the best office jobs I had ever had, so interesting! I found myself in love with pearls and how they come about. The whole process of producing a pearl is fascinating and I was lucky enough to work and be paid to see and be a part of the whole process from start to end, not only during harvest with Paspaley, but also with Broome and Arrow Pearls, helping out during various stages of the pearl cultivation process.
One of the things I love about the pearling industry, is that nothing is wasted. The Pearl of course is the main goal, but the shell is also used, many of my own designs use this shell, known as Pinctada Maxima, which produces the South Sea Pearl. The Pearl Meat is a delicious delicacy and is also used. Then a by product of the culturing of pearls, the natural Keshi pearl can be found after harvest.
Many of my designs are inspired by Broome and the Kimberley. I love Boab Trees, hence many designs using this fabulous tree. I also love all the creatures you can find here, including at home, Dragonflies, Geckos, Green Frogs, Blue Tongue Lizards. I often pass time in the evening watching the geckos on my verandah chasing food, or each other. And of course, there are Snakes, Camels, Turtles, Dolphins, Whales, Crocodiles and Barramundi and so many other things that make the Kimberley so magical. Last but not least, we have the spectacular Staircase to the Moon, a wonderful show put on for us during the full moon over Roebuck Bay.

I feel so lucky to live in this part of the world. Broome, the Kimberley, what’s not to love?

You can find me Saturday and Sunday mornings at the Broome Courthouse Markets, and during the full moon from April to October, at the Town Beach Staircase markets.

If you have seen something you like at the markets and don't find what you are after on this website, feel free to email me on info@kimmie.com.au
